Perlis Indera Kayangan (The Angels’ Paradise) is the smallest state in Malaysia. It lies at the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and has Thailand on its northern border.
Indigenous Kedahans (Kanaks) make up 80 per cent of the population, followed by Chinese (10 per cent), Indians (2 per cent) and Thais (8 per cent).
The capital city is Kangar, which is famous for limestone cave Gua Kelam and snake farms, as well as the Malaysia-Thai border town Padang Besar.
Originally part of Kedah, Perlis became a separate kingdom in 1821 under the rule of Kedah prince Syed Hussain Jamalullail. The Perlis monarch is called Raja and not Sultan.
Perlis is an agrarian state with sugar cane and rice as its main crops.
